Huawei’s high-end smartphone products have suddenly been discounted. As the year-end approaches, Huawei has launched a series of mobile phone discount promotions. The campaign covers multiple models, including the entire Huawei Pura 70 series and the Mate X5. Specifically, the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra offers a maximum discount of 2,000 yuan, while the Mate X5 is discounted by 2,500 yuan.
According to the Huawei official store, Huawei has initiated a New Year promotion themed “Vibrant Renewal, Achievements Every Year,” which runs from December 20, 2024, to February 16, 2025, spanning the entire Spring Festival period. Compared to previous promotional activities, this campaign covers a broader range of models, including the Huawei Pura 70 series, Pocket 2, Mate X5, and Nova series. For the Huawei Pura 70 series, the Pura 70 Ultra is discounted by up to 2,000 yuan, with a post-discount price starting at 7,499 yuan; the Pura 70 Pro+ is discounted by 1,300 yuan, with a post-discount price starting at 6,699 yuan; the Pura 70 Pro is discounted by 1,100 yuan, with a post-discount price starting at 5,399 yuan; and the Pura 70 is discounted by 800 yuan, with a post-discount price starting at 4,699 yuan. The high-end foldable Mate X5 smartphone is also directly reduced by 2,500 yuan. For example, the 12GB + 256GB version, originally priced at 12,999 yuan, is now available for 10,499 yuan after the discount. Additionally, the foldable Pocket 2 series has also seen an overall price reduction of 1,000 yuan. The 12GB + 256GB model, which originally started at 7,499 yuan, is now available for 6,499 yuan. These models also come with additional benefits such as interest-free installment plans for up to 12 months, educational certification discounts, and an 8.8% discount on selected protection service products.
Huawei’s high-end smartphone products have been very popular. According to research firm Counterpoint, Huawei maintained a strong rebound in the third quarter, contributing to a 30% year-on-year increase in sales volume. The Pura 70 series and Mate 60 series were the main drivers of Huawei’s sales, reflecting its strong influence in China’s high-end market. Research firm Canalys stated that in the third quarter of 2024, Huawei further strengthened its image as a technological leader with the launch of its first tri-fold model, the Mate XT. The popularity of the Pura 70 series continued into its second quarter after launch. In the third quarter of 2024, Huawei’s shipments in the price segment above $600 increased by 32% year-on-year, ranking third globally with an 8% market share. In 2025, Huawei is expected to introduce some surprising products.
Peng Bo, Huawei’s director and president of Global Procurement Certification Management Department, recently stated, “Last year, everyone called the Mate 60 the ‘aspirational model,’ but our most profitable products were not this phone, but the Mate X5 and X3. The launch of the tri-fold phone proves Huawei’s leadership in the foldable phone field, as the yield rate of tri-fold phones is very difficult to achieve.” Market research firm CINNO indicated that in terms of market share, Huawei’s foldable phone sales reached approximately 1.12 million units in the third quarter, a 97% year-on-year increase. Huawei’s domestic market share for foldable phones also rose by 2.9 percentage points year-on-year, maintaining its position as the top seller in China’s foldable phone market. This is mainly due to the Mate X5 foldable phone launched in September last year, which has been the best-selling foldable phone in China for four consecutive quarters since its release. Huawei has been the market leader in China’s large foldable phone market for five consecutive years. CINNO reported that in the high-end foldable phone market above 10,000 yuan, Huawei’s market share reached as high as 85% in the third quarter of this year. This data reflects the high level of recognition and influence of its products among consumers.
On December 25, Yu Chengdong, Huawei’s executive director, chairman of the terminal business, and chairman of the Intelligent Car Solutions BU, said on Weibo, “This year, we launched products that others could only dream of but could not produce. Next year, we will have products that people cannot even imagine. In the future, we will have products that people dare not even think about.” Yu Chengdong recalled that last autumn, thanks to the Pioneer Program, Huawei successfully returned to the smartphone market after five consecutive years of sanctions. This year, as the first year of its return to the market, Huawei achieved rapid growth and embarked on a new journey for the terminal business for the next decade. He said, “We have always insisted on creating products that others can only dream of but cannot produce. Now, this product has been launched, which is the world’s first commercial tri-fold screen phone, completely rewriting the history of the smartphone industry. At the same time, our native HarmonyOS has been officially launched and is rapidly improving and maturing for commercial use. Our Mate 70 series, with its unprecedented powerful functions, is now refreshed.” In response, some netizens commented, “It gives people the feeling that ‘I have hidden many good things over these five years, and now I can finally take them out,’ which also makes us more期待ing of Huawei’s new products next year.”
The smartphone market is witnessing a long-awaited recovery. Notably, in 2024, the smartphone market has seen a long-awaited recovery. According to data from research firm Canalys, the global smartphone shipments are expected to reach 1.22 billion units in 2024, a 6% year-on-year increase. After several years of sluggishness, the smartphone industry has shown strong growth momentum this year, with a particularly dense release of new models in December. According to 21st Century Business Herald, Canalys research analyst Zhong Xiaolei told reporters, “Globally, the main driver of this recovery is the faster rebound in emerging markets. With the easing of global inflation this year, a wave of replacement demand has been unleashed, mainly contributed by the low-end price segment.” However, this recovery is not comprehensive. For example, the foldable phone market is gradually cooling down, with weak growth in shipments, while generative AI is rapidly heating up and becoming a key area for major manufacturers to layout for the future. Although 2024 is a year of recovery, in the long term, it is difficult for the smartphone market to maintain high growth rates. Zhong Xiaolei expects that the growth momentum of the smartphone industry will slow down starting from 2025. According to Canalys’ forecast, the growth of the smartphone market will enter a plateau starting from 2025, with the compound annual growth rate from 2024 to 2028 further adjusted to 1%. Currently, the smartphone market has entered a stage of stock competition, especially among the top companies, where every 1% of market share is hard-won. Looking at the global smartphone market, according to Canalys data, in the first three quarters of 2024, Samsung, Apple, and Xiaomi ranked the top three in terms of smartphone shipments. The competition for the fourth and fifth places was between OPPO, vivo, and Transsion. In the Chinese market, the ranking has seen more significant fluctuations this year. In the first quarter, the top five in terms of shipment volume were Huawei, OPPO, Honor, vivo, and Apple, with each holding a market share of 15%-17%, very close to each other. In the second quarter, domestic leading smartphone brands surpassed Apple, taking the top five spots, with vivo ranking first and Apple falling to sixth place. In the third quarter, OPPO ranked sixth.
