As time moved into the fourth quarter of 2024, a large number of statistics and analyses regarding the domestic and international smartphone markets in the third quarter have been emerging. Previously, data analysis firms mostly provided sales figures and rankings of brands both domestically and internationally. Recently, the data analytics firm Canalys released a comprehensive list for the third quarter of 2024, which includes the sales figures of specific models in the domestic market.
To start with, in the third quarter, only Apple and Huawei launched new products that garnered relatively high attention. Apple released the iPhone 16 series, while Huawei unveiled its high – priced triple – folding model, the Huawei Mate XT Extraordinary Master. In preparation for the flagship models to be launched in the fourth quarter, many manufacturers, including Huawei, initiated price – cutting activities for their then – current flagship models to reduce inventory pressure. According to Canalys’s list, among the top 10 smartphones, Apple occupied half, that is, five seats. The analysis shows that most of the models with high sales rankings were the Pro versions of the iPhone 15 and 16, with only the standard version of the iPhone 15 appearing at No. 9 on the list. The average price of the Apple models on the list reached nearly 8,000 yuan. For Honor, the Honor X50 ranked second, achieving excellent sales results thanks to its low price and extensive sales channels both online and offline. For OPPO, the OPPO A3x ranked fourth, which is also a low – priced model targeting the offline market. For Huawei, the Huawei Pura 70 ranked sixth. Huawei’s discount campaign for the Pura 70 series in the third quarter boosted the sales of this imaging flagship’s standard version. For REDMI, the Redmi K70 Ultra Edition ranked seventh. As a high – performance model with a high cost – effectiveness ratio, it achieved good sales. For vivo, the vivo Y37 ranked tenth, which, like the models from Honor and OPPO, is a low – priced model with multiple sales channels.
Overall, among the top – ten smartphones, Apple, with the highest average price, occupied the most seats. Next were Huawei models priced around 5,000 yuan and REDMI models around 3,000 yuan. The other models were mainly high – volume offline models. Judging from the third – quarter sales alone, when all manufacturers were offering discounts, Apple’s models still attracted the most consumers. Compared with the global sales, only Apple’s models and Samsung’s low – positioned A series models made it into the top ten globally, with much less diversity than in the domestic market.
Moreover, the firm also released the rankings of manufacturers in the high – end smartphone market (priced at around 4,400 yuan and above) in the third quarter. In this highly – contested high – end market segment, Apple and Huawei are still leading. However, Apple’s market share declined by 5% year – on – year, while Huawei continued its strong growth from last year. Honor, Xiaomi, and Samsung ranked third, fourth, and fifth respectively, but their market shares were still far behind those of Apple and Huawei.
Now that we have entered the last month of the fourth quarter, the statistics for the fourth quarter are expected to be released next month. All manufacturers launched highly – anticipated flagship models and high – volume mid – range models in the fourth quarter. In addition, with the “Singles’ Day” and “Double Twelve” shopping events in the fourth quarter, sales volumes are expected to see significant growth compared with the third quarter. Whether Apple and Huawei can maintain their high sales volumes and whether other manufacturers can surpass them remains to be seen. Interested parties should keep a close eye on the developments.
