After watching the video, let’s dive into the detailed reviews. Let’s take a look at those electronic products we loved this year!
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2
The topic of foldable-screen phones has been particularly hot recently. When Huawei Mate X2 was launched, it had over 3 million reservations, with a very high level of discussion. The reason is that foldable screens are still a novelty and naturally attract those who pursue new technology.
Boy A loves to try new things and got a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 foldable-screen phone last year, which is now his main device. It even serves as a social tool when he takes it out, making people want to play with it.
In fact, when the first Galaxy Fold came out, Boy was a bit tempted to buy it, but he was ultimately discouraged by its appearance. The two main issues that he found hard to accept were: first, the very large notch on the right side when unfolded, which looked quite awkward visually; and second, the external screen was only 4.6 inches when folded, which was not very practical.
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 has done a pretty good job in addressing these two issues, with significant improvements in both appearance and technology. So, as soon as it was launched in late September last year, he got it.
Appearance and Screen
The Fold 2 has stronger lines in its appearance, and the color of Pine Smoke Ink is quite business-like. The size can be summarized as “narrow and tall,” but the grip feels good. However, the weight of 282g is almost twice that of an iPhone, which can be a bit tiring to hold for a long time.
The screen is a highlight. Compared to the first generation’s 4.6-inch mini external screen, the second generation’s external screen size has increased to 6.2 inches, which can basically be used as a normal phone. It works well for browsing the web, replying to WeChat messages, and making phone calls, giving a “two-for-one” feeling.
When unfolded, the large screen size is 7.6 inches, similar to a small tablet. The notch screen of the first generation has been replaced with a punch-hole screen, and the bezels have been narrowed, providing a near-full-screen experience that should be appealing to gamers.
Samsung’s screen technology has always been strong. Boy A thinks the screen quality is great. The second-generation dynamic AMOLED display has very vibrant colors, and the 120Hz high dynamic refresh rate is quite impressive.
For foldable screens, I believe everyone is most concerned about the folding experience, such as whether there are creases. The Fold 2 uses Samsung’s ultra-thin flexible glass, which has significantly improved flexibility, durability, and flatness compared to the previous generation. Previously, there were reports of the first generation’s screen breaking in severe cold weather, but the second generation’s screen does not have this issue.
As for creases, after using it for half a year, Boy A’s experience is that a relatively shallow crease will form in the center of the screen when the foldable screen is unfolded, but it is not significant enough to affect usage. (Of course, this also depends on the individual. Boy A thinks it’s okay, but some friends around Fan Zhu who have a “screen phobia” still find it uncomfortable. The solution to this problem will rely on technological progress.)
The Fold 2 uses an inward folding method, with a built-in hidden hinge, making it smooth to open and close.
A feature brought by the hinge is the ability to stop at multiple angles, which means it can be used as a built-in phone stand. This is quite useful when taking photos.
Foldable Screen Operation Experience
Foldable-screen phones can also bring many new experiences in operation. After using it for half a year, Boy A thinks the most worth mentioning are split-screen and photography.
Split-screen is a major feature of foldable screens and is particularly suitable for multitasking. For example, Boy A often needs to handle WeChat and write emails, and many times he needs to refer to materials. In such cases, the full-screen mode is very convenient, allowing him to type and view materials simultaneously, which greatly improves efficiency.
Of course, you can also watch a drama on one screen and something else on the other, making it the perfect “slacking tool.”
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 can support up to three applications running synchronously, which is quite characteristic of foldable screens. The operation is simple, just by dragging and dropping. Additionally, a small window can be opened. However, Boy A doesn’t use this “multitasking” feature much in daily life.
The photography function is definitely another major feature of foldable-screen phones, giving a feeling of opening a new world.
For example, this Samsung model has an “adaptive split-screen mode.” When the phone is in a folded state, the camera will automatically split into two parts: the upper screen for photo preview and the lower screen for the operation interface. By adjusting the angle, you can get different perspectives, and many tricky angles can be captured.
Dual preview is even more interesting. After unfolding the phone, both the internal and external screens can be used simultaneously. The person being photographed can also see themselves on the external screen.
This is extremely practical for girls who worry about their boyfriends or husbands taking unflattering photos. They can easily find the right pose, composition, and angle, and the other person just needs to press the shutter. This is the key to saying goodbye to boyfriend-angle photos. (PS: Selfies can also use dual preview.)
After half a year of use, Boy A thinks this phone has very obvious advantages and disadvantages. The biggest shortcoming is probably that the apps downloaded from the domestic app store do not match the Samsung screen. For example, WeChat and news clients only stretch the half-screen content to full-screen, and the “adaptive split-screen mode” and other functions can only be applied to Samsung’s built-in apps, which do not fully leverage the advantages of the foldable screen.
Additionally, the battery drains a bit quickly when unfolded, the charging speed is average, and it takes over an hour to fully charge. It is also not waterproof… In Boy A’s words, you have to be a bit careful when holding it.
For now, foldable screens are more suitable for tech enthusiasts who like to try new things. With technological advancements, the experience of future generations should get better and better.
Huawei Mate 40
Fan Zhu is a long-time fan of Huawei. When the Mate series first came out, I got one under Boy A’s recommendation. Since then, I have always been the first to get the new models, and before I knew it, I had collected four.
The Mate series of phones has accompanied Fan Zhu to many places around the world, from the beautiful and magnificent deserts of Morocco, the watchmaking factories in the Jura Valley of Switzerland, the Queen’s castle in Scotland to the seaside of Monaco… I can say that I am deeply in love with this series of phones.
After the launch of the Mate 40 Pro, I continued the tradition and quickly got the new phone.
Compared to the previous generation, the Mate 40 Pro has many upgrades. Let’s start with the appearance. Having used the Mate series for so many years, I always find a color that moves me with each new model. For example, the emerald green of the 20 series, which is low-key and textured; and the starry silver of the 30 series, which is particularly ethereal.
This time, when switching to the 40 series, I chose the glaze white, which is also the first time for the Mate series. The glaze white reminds me of the warm and jade-like white of Chanel J12, which is very textured and especially beautiful.
The phone’s recognizability is also very high. The Mate 40 Pro series retains the central axis symmetry design while adding a star ring design, inspired by the universe,
